Building Better Jobs in Texas:
Transforming A Regional Workforce Training System Throuhgh Professional Learning and Development

Evidence of Professional Competency in Scholarship

Overview

Through this $10.6 million grant proposal, Sam Houston State University (SHSU) sought funds from the U.S. Economic Development Agency's Good Jobs Challenge to develop a regional workforce training program, "Building Better Jobs in Texas," in partnership with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) and other regional entities. I collaborated with several colleagues to co-write the grant proposal, which aimed to create a workforce pipeline to strengthen the Texas Gulf Coast Economic Development District by addressing skill gaps and improving employment retention rates. Despite the proposal's comprehensive goals to establish long-term partnerships, provide wraparound services, and implement various training and certification programs to enhance job readiness and career advancement opportunities, it was not awarded.

Goal & Focus Area Alignment

The "Building Better Jobs in Texas" grant proposal aligns with focus areas by integrating learning technologies, adult learning experience design, and workforce & organizational development. It leverages SHSU's online learning capabilities, emphasizes instructional design for adults, and builds strategic partnerships with industry and regional employers. This proposal serves as a prime example of my vision to innovate learning experiences and making societal impact.
